How CBD Can Help Benefit Your Pets

How CBD Can Help Benefit Your Pets
April 08, 2021

What can CBD do for your pets? First a brief explanation of processes and systems. All mammals have an endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system helps the body stay in balance, known as homeostasis. Receptors, present on top of the cells, are located throughout the ECS and communicate with the Phyto cannabinoids (from plants) and endocannabinoids (that occur naturally in the body). These receptors help transmit messages across the cell's outer barrier and the outside world, effecting a change in the cell function. Many disease processes arise from defects in signal transduction pathways. Receptors act like a lock and key, with the key present, the door opens. CBD works on various ion channels (allow flow of electrical signals throughout the body) to provide a therapeutic effect. CBD interacts with transporters, enzymes, cellular structures, and membranes too.

Mitochondria (responsible for generating 90% of the chemical energy that a cell needs to survive) and CBD work together to improve function. If mitochondria are not functioning properly, it can have a negative impact on cell life and the whole body. Homeostasis, oxidative stress and the healing and destruction of cells are also part of mitochondria's’ key roles. CBD oil is a potent antioxidant (neutralize free radicals) reducing oxidative stress and encouraging the protection of cells.

Now that you understand some of the processes, what can CBD do to benefit your pet? CBD is a natural anti-inflammatory that may help pets with joint problems. CB1 receptors stimulate the immune system and reduce inflammation. They also change the way the brain responds to pain. CBD also binds to CB2 receptors found in the immune system, which can induce the body to produce more cannabinoids naturally. CBD is reported to help with:

  • Arthritis
  • Hip and elbow dysplasia
  • Sprains and strains
  • Torn ligaments
  • Anxiety

CBD may also help reduce the frequency and severity of pets with seizures due how it interacts with the endocannabinoid system. It is thought that abnormal electrical charges of the neurons in the system are what cause seizures and CBD can bind to these receptors and improve the functioning of the nervous system. Pets in pain, from arthritis to nerve pain, may possibly find relief with CBD as it can help the way their brain perceives pain. As a result, sleep and nausea can be reduced and pain can be better managed.
